Thursday 28th June
John Kennedy, IFPI and Alison Wenham, AIM & WIN
Room 1: 11.45 AM – 12.45 PM
Modelling the new music economy.
The old record company business model has revealed itself to be out of step with the times; the sector’s entire future depends on finding new approaches that not only work, but also swell the much-depleted coffers.
John Kennedy, the IFPI’s chairman and CEO, will outline his vision for a new record industry, assessing and dissecting the plethora of new (but, for the most part, untested) models out there.
John will be joined by Alison Wenham, president of the Worldwide Independent Network, to consider the impact of these models on independent labels, especially at a time of increased record company consolidation.
Tony Visconti
Room 1: 2.00 PM – 3.00 PM
The term ‘legend’ should be used sparingly, but we make no apology for using it to describe Tony Visconti. Name your favourite artists of the past 40 years and the chances are he’s worked with them.
Most notably, he produced David Bowie during his zeitgeist-shattering peak in the Seventies and most recently produced Morrissey’s Ringleader Of The Tormentors, an album that propelled the former Smiths singer to a whole new level of popularity. In between, he’s worked with acts such as T. Rex, Sparks, Thin Lizzy and The Stranglers.
His pioneering studio work from the late-1960s onwards has had an immeasurable impact on sound recording and has raised the bar for everyone working in studios. Immaterial of the changes in business models or distribution, the best music has a timeless quality which sees it endure changes.
Tony Visconti is the producer’s producer and he will offer priceless insights into the recording and creative process behind the music which will pulsate long into the future
